Next Meeting Mar 4th will be a fun Sharing My Bead Collection! Similar to what we did in Jan with religious jewelry, please bring some samples of a collection that you have. We did this a few years ago with non-bead collections! This time we will be looking at Bead Collections!
We are asking attendees to bring 5 things that they collect or are interested in. The items should have something to do with beads! They don’t have to be part of a formal collection. At the meeting we will share and learn things about each other!
Wednesday, Mar 4th
7 – 9:30 pm
Veterans Memorial Building,
4117 Overland Ave, Culver City
Our next Meeting, Wednesday, Feb 5th will be Organizing with Regina Lark of A Clear Path. Their company motto is:
We’ll help you control the stuff in your head and what’s under your bed!
Did you know that some right-brain creative types tend toward chronic disorganization? That may pertain to some of us! We could all use some help figuring out how to organize our beads, materials and projects! She will talk about good bead organizers and how to cope with organizing our materials. She’ll offer a variety of ways to de-clutter, organize, and clear the path! Continue reading Getting Organized! February 5th Meeting!
The Bead Society will be hosting our twice a year Bead Bazaar on October 27th at the Veterans Memorial Building in Culver City from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Continue reading Culver City Bead Bazaar Coming in October!
The Craft & Folk Art Museum has changed its name to Craft Contemporary. A recent article in the LA Times described the change. A new website for Craft Contemporary will be available in the Spring. According to the article there are some who view “craft & folk” as dusty and old. The new name will be fresh and relevant. You can read the article here!
The museum is a non-collecting museum. It does plan to offer educational programs about the history of craft. The change isn’t meant to indicate a change in programming.
I didn’t know that the museum used to be the Egg & the Eye, opening in 1965. In 1973, it became a nonprofit museum with the Craft & Folk Art Museum name.
Check out their website for more information about their exhibitions and programs.
Writing a blog can be very frustrating. Finding the time, finding the material to write about, checking it and doing it right! It all takes time and effort! I must be getting cranky! Ha!
This is a call out to members of the Bead Society to contribute short, informational pieces, or opinion pieces, or general comments about their own successes and failures in the Bead World!
We all can learn from each other!

Congratulations to our member, Angie Carrington of Carrington Treasures. One of Angie’s statement necklaces has been accepted into the Orange County Fair!
Here’s Angie’s story!
I‘m super excited about it. I’ve been working on this necklace on and off since last year so I’m really happy that it made it through.
I submitted my entry application online on May 30th along with a picture of the necklace that was required. I had to submit under the “Professional” category per the policies and rules. Then I had to wait to see if it was accepted. Finally on June 11th I got the acceptance email. Yay!!
Per the email, I need to deliver the piece to the OC Promenade on Saturday, June 23rd. From there it will be judged by a panel of experts of sorts. I would love it if I won anything, but even if I don’t, just having it exhibited at the fair is a WOW for me!
The piece is a combination of several mediums. I incorporated some Soutache and Shibori techniques for the main pendant and included various types and sizes of seed beads, pearls, crystals and metal beads to give the piece some sense of depth.
The entire piece was sewn on black felt and is completely finished with black suede & ribbon in the back. We’ve attached a picture of the back so you can see.
The Orange County Fair is July 13 – August 12, 2018 in Costa Mesa at 88 Fair Drive. Consider going to see Angie’s lovely necklace, and other items on display.
Some of the exciting speakers the Bead Society has lined up for the 2018 year are as follows:
In February, Karlis Karklins from the Society of Bead Researchers will talk about The Truth about Dutch Beads.
In March, our own member, Billy Steinberg will talk about the book he created entitled, Wild Beads of Africa.
In April, Lilly Todaro will beguile us with Creativity and the Magic of Beads. Lilly has won many awards for her intricate beadwork. She is well known in the Southern California area as well as beyond for her beautiful necklaces.
Join us at the Culver City Veterans Memorial Building in the Rotunda Room at 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm on the first Wednesday of the month!
Our newest attraction at the upcoming Bead Bazaar is the Make and Take Jewelry classes.
